Children's Heel Pain (Calcaneal Apophysitis)

A very common problem that I treat in children is pain in the back of their heels.  This is primarily due to growth spurts.  Bone grows faster than soft tissue.  The result is tightness in the heel cords.  Most kids that I see with heel pain are of the pronated (flat footed) variety. I recently have spoken to parents who have taken their children all over including Hopkins trying to get a diagnosis. Children suffer with this condition for months to years.

Luckily, I feel this problem is one of the easiest problems to treat. My technique for making custom orthotics works tremendously well for this condtion. Children can go back to their desired sports within a few weeks.  While the orthotics are being made I teach children how to properly stretch and ice. Also, a temporary removable foot strapping is made for the child to speed up the healing process. I apply soft heel lifts to the shoes to also speed up the healing process.
